First-time clients often focus entirely on the tattoo design and forget that their body's state on the day of the session directly affects the experience. A well-prepared body means a better session, less pain, faster healing, and a better final result. Here is exactly how to prepare.
The Day Before Your Session
Moisturise
Apply a good moisturiser to the area being tattooed the night before your session. Hydrated skin takes ink more smoothly and consistently than dry skin. Do not apply anything on the day of the session itself — just clean, dry skin is ideal.
Avoid Alcohol
Do not drink alcohol the night before your tattoo. Alcohol thins the blood, which causes more bleeding during the session, which in turn dilutes the ink as it is being deposited. More bleeding means the tattoo heals less cleanly. It also makes you feel worse during the session.
Get a Good Night's Sleep
This sounds obvious but matters genuinely. A well-rested body handles pain better, heals faster, and sits more calmly through a long session. Fatigue amplifies pain perception significantly.
On the Day of Your Session
Eat a Proper Meal
Eat a proper meal 1-2 hours before your appointment. Not a snack — a real meal with carbohydrates and protein. Your body is about to undergo a physically demanding process that burns energy. People who come in without eating are far more likely to feel dizzy, lightheaded, or nauseous during a session. Keep a snack and a sweet drink in your bag for long sessions.
Wear the Right Clothing
Wear clothing that gives easy access to the area being tattooed. If you are getting your forearm done, wear a short-sleeved or loose-sleeved shirt. If it is your back, wear something you can take off easily or that opens at the back. Comfort matters for long sessions.
Shower Before You Come
Come clean. This is both hygiene and respect for the artist working closely on your skin. Do not apply any lotion, sunscreen, or oil to the area being tattooed on the day itself.
Stay Hydrated
Drink water throughout the day. Hydrated skin takes ink better and the session is more comfortable overall.
What to Avoid Before Your Session
Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen — both thin the blood. Paracetamol is fine if you need pain relief. Avoid sunburn on the area being tattooed — sunburned skin cannot be tattooed. Avoid heavy exercise the morning of your session — your skin is more sensitive after intense physical activity. Do not apply numbing cream without consulting your artist first — some creams affect how skin takes ink.
During the Session
Communicate with your artist. If you need a break, ask for one. If the pain is intense, say so. Experienced artists know how to work with clients at different pain tolerance levels. Breathe steadily. Tense muscles make the experience harder — consciously relaxing your body helps.
