Getting a tattoo is only half the process. The other half — how you care for your tattoo in the days and weeks after your session — determines whether that piece looks stunning for life or fades into a blur within a year. At Deep Aarchi Tattoo in Gurugram, we walk every client through aftercare before they leave the studio. This guide is the written version of everything we tell you.
Why Aftercare Matters More in India
Indian climate presents specific challenges for tattoo healing. High humidity in monsoon season, extreme heat in summers, dust, and sweat all affect how a fresh tattoo heals. A tattoo that would heal in 10 days in a dry climate might take 14-16 days in Gurugram's summer. Understanding these factors helps you take the right precautions.
The First 24 Hours — What to Do
Your artist will wrap your tattoo before you leave the studio. Leave this wrap on for at least 4-6 hours, or overnight if you got tattooed in the evening. When you remove it, wash gently with clean water and a mild fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean tissue — never rub.
Do not rewrap the tattoo after the first wash unless you are going out in dusty or polluted conditions. The tattoo needs to breathe.
The First Two Weeks — Daily Routine
Washing
Wash your tattoo twice a day with lukewarm water and a gentle soap. Cetaphil or a simple fragrance-free soap works well. Do not scrub. Use your clean fingertips only, never a cloth or loofah.
Moisturising
Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturiser 2-3 times a day. In India, Vaseline Intensive Care, Cetaphil moisturiser, or pure coconut oil (just a thin layer) all work well. The key word is thin — too much moisturiser traps moisture and causes problems.
What to Avoid
Avoid direct sunlight on the tattoo for at least 3 weeks. Avoid swimming pools, rivers, and the sea — chlorine and bacteria are enemies of a healing tattoo. Avoid gyms and heavy sweating for the first week if possible. Do not pick, scratch, or peel flaking skin — let it come off naturally.
Signs Your Tattoo is Healing Normally
Some redness and swelling in the first 24-48 hours is completely normal. The tattoo will feel warm to the touch, like mild sunburn. After a few days it will start to peel — this is also normal. The skin over the tattoo sheds like any healing wound. Do not panic when you see colour coming off with the flakes — the ink is in the deeper layers of the skin.
Signs Something is Wrong
Seek medical advice if you notice: excessive swelling that gets worse after day 2, pus or green/yellow discharge, fever or chills, extreme heat or throbbing pain that gets worse after 48 hours, or a rash spreading beyond the tattoo. These are signs of infection and need medical attention, not just better aftercare.
Long-Term Care — Keeping Your Tattoo Looking Fresh
Once healed, always apply sunscreen (SPF 50+) before sun exposure. Sun is the single biggest cause of tattoo fading. Keep the skin moisturised regularly. Drink water. These sound simple because they are — a well-hydrated, sun-protected skin holds ink dramatically better over the years.
Our Aftercare Product Recommendations for India
Wash: Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser or any fragrance-free face wash. Moisturiser: Cetaphil Moisturising Cream, Vaseline Intensive Care, or pure coconut oil (thin layer only). Sunscreen: Any SPF 50+ sunscreen once fully healed. Pain relief if needed: Paracetamol — avoid aspirin or ibuprofen in the first 24 hours as they thin the blood.
